Frequently Asked Questions

Getting started

Do I have to be sure I'm an alcoholic to come?

No. The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking, and many of us were not very wholehearted about that when we first walked in. If you think you may have a problem with alcohol, you are welcome here. Everyone is welcome regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, income or profession.

Does it cost anything?

No. There are no dues or fees. A.A. is self-supporting through its own members' contributions, and giving is always your choice.

What if this is my first meeting, or my first one back after a slip?

Welcome. At the start, the host asks whether anyone is here for a first meeting or returning after a slip. You can say so, or you can just listen. Our Friday evening meeting is a Beginners meeting, and you can ask the host or co-host in the chat anything at all.

Is A.A. a religious program?

A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution. Members of every faith, and of none, are welcome. The steps use the words “God as we understood Him,” and each member decides for themselves what that means.

Joining online

When do you meet?

Twice a day, every day of the year: 7:30 to 8:30 AM and 6:00 to 7:00 PM Atlantic Standard Time (AST). The morning meeting uses the Daily Reflections format. The evening format changes by day of the week. On the last Friday of each month we also celebrate anniversaries.

What time is that where I live?

AST is UTC−4 all year, because Puerto Rico does not change its clocks. That matches Eastern Daylight Time in summer and is one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time in winter. A time zone converter will do the rest.

How do I join?

We meet on Zoom, so all you need is a phone or a computer, from anywhere in the world. The join links are on the Meeting Format page. For the morning meeting, request the passcode there, allow a few minutes for a reply, and check your spam or junk folder for our email.

Can I join by phone, without video?

Yes. The dial-in numbers are on the Meeting Format page. On your phone's keypad, press *6 to mute or unmute and *9 to raise or lower your hand.

Do I have to be on camera?

No. Being on camera is not required to attend.

Do you have meetings in Spanish?

Our meetings are in English. For Spanish and English meetings across Puerto Rico, see the Area 77 list on our Other Meetings page. The Meeting Guide app can also help you find meetings online and in person.

¿Busca reuniones en español? Nuestras reuniones son en inglés, pero la página Otras reuniones tiene la lista del Área 77, con reuniones en español e inglés por toda la isla.

Privacy and safety

Is it anonymous?

Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions. We ask everyone to connect from a quiet, private place if possible, and to use a headset or earbuds if others are nearby so no one outside the meeting can hear. If your space isn't private, please be mindful of your camera and of everyone else's anonymity.

Are the meetings recorded?

No. We do not record our meetings or use AI in them.

What if someone makes me uncomfortable?

Harassment of any kind, including in the Zoom chat, is not welcome here. If you feel unsafe, say something, or write to the host or co-host in the chat. Keeping this a safe space is part of our First Tradition.

I drink heavily and want to stop. Is there anything I should know first?

A.A. is a fellowship of peers, not medical care. If you drink heavily every day, stopping suddenly can be medically dangerous, so please talk with a doctor first. In an emergency, call 911. If you are in crisis or thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988.

In the meeting

What happens in a meeting?

The host opens with a welcome, and members read the A.A. Preamble and “How It Works.” We welcome newcomers and visitors, celebrate anniversaries, and then members share their experience, strength and hope. Near the end we make announcements and close with the Serenity Prayer. The meeting stays open for fifteen minutes afterward for fellowship.

Do I have to speak?

No. You can just sit and listen and learn more about recovery, or you can share. It's completely up to you. To share, raise your hand, wave or unmute.

How does sharing work?

We use a four-minute timer so that as many members as possible can share. Please avoid crosstalk, which means giving advice, criticism, praise or feedback about another person's share.

What does “closed meeting” mean?

Most of our meetings are closed, which means attendance is limited to people who have a desire to stop drinking, in support of A.A.'s singleness of purpose. If you think you have a problem with alcohol, you are welcome. Our anniversary meetings are open, and visitors are glad to join us.

What are the evening meetings like?

The format changes by day. Some evenings may switch to a topic meeting.

Can I get proof of attendance?

Yes. Email prsobrietynetwork@gmail.com with your name and the date and time you attended.

Staying connected

How do I find a sponsor?

A sponsor is an A.A. member who shares how the program worked for them. It is not a counselor or a professional. Ask a sponsorship coordinator at any meeting, or email prsobrietynetwork@gmail.com with “sponsor” in the subject line. You can also private-chat anyone in the meeting, and if no coordinator is present, the host or co-host can help.

Can I make PRSN my home group?

Yes. A home group is a meeting you return to regularly, where people come to know you, and PRSN members are welcome to make this theirs.

How can I be of service?

No sobriety time is needed to read or co-host. Arrive early and speak with the host. Chairing a meeting asks for 90 days of sobriety.

Where can I get A.A. literature?

We have free literature and books available. Ask our literature person in a meeting, or visit onlineliterature.aa.org.

How do I reach you?
